BG‑Mosquitaire: THE trap for control programs
Insecticide resistance and the environmental downsides of repeated fogging are pushing mosquito control programs to adopt selective, insecticide-free tools. The BG‑Mosquitaire is purpose-built for long-term, outdoor deployments where operational durability, stable performance, and scalable servicing matter.
Peer‑reviewed island projects demonstrate that high-density trapping with odor-baited BG‑Mosquitaire traps can rapidly drive down mosquito populations—offering a practical alternative to insecticide-based approaches in defined geographies (e.g., islands, resorts, remote facilities, contained campuses).
Evidence from real-world field operations
Published studies using odor-baited BG‑Mosquitaire traps report:
- Rapid elimination in an isolated setting: Aedes aegypti + Culex quinquefasciatus eliminated from a 7.2‑ha island within 5 months using odor‑baited traps at 10 traps/ha.
- High suppression at operational scale: On a 41.4‑ha island, a combined strategy including human-odor-baited traps (~6 traps/ha) achieved very high suppression for Aedes albopictus and Culex quinquefasciatus.
- Acceleration via higher density: On a 1.6‑ha island, increasing human‑odor trap density (up to ~18.8 traps/ha) supported rapid elimination of Aedes albopictus (with complementary larval source management).
Important: Outcomes depend on isolation/re‑invasion pressure, breeding site availability, target species ecology, and the strength of complementary measures (especially larval source management). We recommend piloting with monitoring and scaling density based on results.
How it works
BG‑Mosquitaire is an odor‑baited suction trap:
- Mosquitoes follow an odor plume and are guided by strong visual contrast (light top + dark inlet).
- A low‑power fan generates suction, pulling mosquitoes into the catch system for retention and dehydration.
- The trap is robust and 24/7 operating performance spanning more than 6.5 years has been recorded under tropical climate conditions.
Required attractant: BG‑Mozzibait
For control programs and published elimination/suppression projects, BG‑Mosquitaire traps are run with BG‑Mozzibait (human-odor attractant).
BG‑Mozzibait is required for intended performance.CO₂ guidance (recommended for broad-spectrum maximum impact)
CO₂ is one of the most important universal mosquito attractants.
Recommended operating modes:
-
Broad-spectrum suppression mode:
BG‑Mozzibait + CO₂ for the widest range of mosquito species. -
Tiger mosquito focused mode:
Targeting Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), you can operate without CO₂ (typically requiring higher trap density to match control impact).
(Adding CO₂ increases catch and expands species coverage.)
- Avoid placing the trap in open sunlight; use shaded, sheltered locations.
- Protect from wind and direct sun; humid/shaded vegetation edges often perform best.
- In inhabited sites, position traps to pull mosquitoes away from high-activity areas (not directly next to people).
Turning a trap into a population control tool
If your goal is suppression, plan around:
- Trap density and coverage (increase density when elimination/suppression is the objective). Based on data from more than 20 mass trapping field operations, we recommend a density of 10 Mosquitaire traps per hectare.
- Servicing cadence (lure replacement, catch retrieval, CO₂ supply logistics)
-
Larval source management (LSM) to reduce reinfestation from breeding sites

Contents of the BG-Mosquitaire:
- 1x BG-Mosquitaire trap with suction funnel
- 2x catch bag
- 1x funnel net
- 1x outdoor power supply unit, EU plug, Typ II (8m)
- 1x attractant (effective for up to 2 months)
The BG-Mosquitaire can also be upgraded with CO2 for all mosquito species with the BG-Booster CO2. We offer now also an optimized yeast kit for 24-hour CO2 production, the BG-CO2 Generator. Learn more about it >
Besides the 24-hour option (BG-CO2 Generator), a combination of 3l of water, 700g of sugar, and 20g of yeast was shown to produce sufficient CO2 to last for 3 - 4 days.
